What to do when identity documents are exposed
Distinguish a document number, a scan and a lost physical document.
Read the exact field description
An incident may list a driver’s-license number, passport details, or a scanned document. Do not assume all three were present. Keep the organization’s notice and any relevant source reference privately.
Contact the issuing authority
Use a verified government website or a number from an existing document. Explain what was exposed and ask about reporting or replacement. Procedures vary; a leaked number does not automatically require the same response as a lost physical document.
Watch for related misuse
Review the accounts and correspondence connected to the incident. If other identity fields such as an SSN were involved, consult the applicable identity-theft and credit guidance. Report actual misuse through official channels.
Limit new copies
Before sending an ID to a removal service, establish who operates it, why a copy is required and which fields are necessary. Do not upload documents to an unsolicited form. Avenvale’s public library does not collect identity-document images or full SSNs.
